GEORGE TOWN: Penang's iconic Komtar is set to make history once its RM300,000 "World's Tallest Mural" project is completed in six months.
Sponsored by Only World Group (OWG), Nippon Paint and supported by the state, the project to commence at the end of this month will see five acclaimed local artists attempting to paint on the 230-metre mural along Komtar.
The artists namely Bibichun, The Sliz, Kangblabla, Sattama and IMMJN were picked based on their experience working on large-scale murals abroad.
OWG's CEO Datuk Seri Richard Koh said the project was in line with efforts to revitalise the famous landmark.
He said the mural is not only set to beautify Komtar but also possibly earn it a place in the acclaimed Guinness Book of World Records.
"The current-holder for this title measures 70m high and this mural will make full use of Komtar's massive stature and measure 230m high and 13.1m wide when completed, " he said in his speech at The Top, Komtar.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was present, also lauded the attempt, saying the state hopes to gain international recognition for the effort.
"We are proud to support this endeavour which will put us on the world map," he said, expressing hope that the mural would be fully completed by January 2018.
The project also features Nippon Paint as product sponsor as its group marketing assistant general manager Alex Yoong said it is an opportune time for the company to provide a platform for artists to express their creativity.
