BESUT: Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UNISZA) Terengganu will implement a dairy goat farming project to help farmers generate income, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.
The large-scale project would begin in April in Hulu Besut, he added.
He said research by experts at UNISZA found that breeding dairy goats would fetch the farmers a good income as they could earn no less than RM2,000 a month selling the milk from four to five goats.
"UNISZA will also help the farmers obtain dairy goat stock for breeding," he said to reporters here after opening the annual meetings of the Kota Putera UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings.
Idris, who is the Besut MP, said a dairy goat pen for the project was currently being built and was expected to be launched on April 22.
He said the project was another effort by the ministry to help farmers, besides the introduction of a new paddy seed by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) which could raise rice production from five tonnes to seven tonnes per hectare. — Bernama
