Ex-Bernas senior officer jailed 60 months, fined RM365,000

ALOR STAR: The Sessions Court here today found a former Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas) senior officer guilty and sentenced him to 60 months imprisonment and RM365,000 fine for six corruption charges.
Judge Zanol Rashid Hussain in his ruling said the defence failed to raise any reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case against Hassin Mad Zin.
On the first charge, Hasin, 55, was meted out 10 months' jail and RM45,000 fine or another five months imprisonment for accepting RM9,000 from the owner of WH Awana Enterprise.
He received the money through an account at Bank Islam, Alor Setar at 1.38pm on Aug 6, 2014, as an inducement to obtain 30 tons of ST15 rice for the company for July the same year, from the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry.
On the second to sixth charge, he was meted out 10 months' jail and RM64,000 fine or six months imprisonment, each, for accepting RM12,800 in Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec 2013 and Jan 2014.
He accepted the money from the owner of Syarikat Berkat Zarul Enterprise as an inducement to obtain 40 tons of ST15 rice for the company for Sept, Oct and Nov and twice in Dec from the same ministry.
He received the money through an account at Bank Islam Cawangan Guar Chempedak, Gurun on Sept 11, Oct 9, Nov 8, Dec 5, 2013 and Jan 7, 2014.
The judge ordered the sentences to run concurrently and granted a stay pending an appeal to the High Court.
Hasin who was represented by defence counsel Mohamad Sofee Razak paid the fine.
