PETALING JAYA: Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz has criticised the postponement of the much awaited Disney film "Beauty and the Beast" describing it as "ridiculous".
Nazri said the film has to be evaluated overall prior to imposing any sort of ban.
"I do not think that it (temporary ban) is going to influence anyone's (judgment). All these years, even without the homosexual character in the Beauty and the Beast, there are homosexual people in the world," he told theSun when contacted today.
As such, Nazri opined that a film should not be banned due a homosexual character in it despite homosexual acts being banned in the country.
"Do you ban a film when it is about murder which is obviously against the law? Where do we draw the line on such a matter? Let the people decide for themselves, let them think," he added.
His response came after the release of the Disney film was reportedly postponed indefinitely due to an "internal review" according to its distributor The Walt Disney Co (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
The movie was scheduled to be released in Malaysian audiences on Thursday.
It is learnt that no further reason for the postponement was given, and there was no indication of when the new release date would be.
Since the announcement, all cinemas have taken down the movie from their showtime listings.
Some cinema chains have also offered refunds to patrons who have already booked tickets.
Beauty and the Beast, a live-action remake of Disney's classic animated feature, has garnered some international controversy for including a homosexual character.
