CREATIVE director of Brooks Brothers’ womenswear, Zac Posen looks to fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky’s Polaroids from the 1970s to conceptualise a collection for spring 2017.
Suiting options take shape in traditional fabrics – glen plaids, solid gray flannel, and tweeds along with an exclusive graphic botanical print – sculpturally manipulated into elegant, feminine jackets, skirts and trousers.
On the contrary, dresses are adorned in floral prints reminiscent of the romantic Victorian era. The little black dress is reinterpreted in ultra-wearable knits, while spring sweaters reflect the season’s vibrancy.
“This season, I envisioned menswear-inspired sportswear rendered in ultra-feminine silhouettes. The modern Brooks Brothers woman is looking for ease and versatility in her wardrobe. The collection updates Brooks Brothers’ heritage with flirty yet sophisticated pieces. New fit, same spirit,” said Posen, who joined the New York brand in 2014.
A comprehensive accessory line complements the collection, where handbags double as clutches, shoulder bags or totes, and scarves are designed in various prints to match. Lastly, shoes range from chunky-heeled flats, to ankle-straps in patent leather with python-wrapped heels.
Meanwhile for its Red Fleece line, Brooks Brothers journeyed to the opulent Hearst Castle along the Central Coast of California, where publisher William Randolph Hearst hosted politicians and celebrities for long weekends and formal dinners back in the 1920s and 30s.
The spring/summer 2017 womenswear collection exudes elements of the landmark’s beautiful and antique design. The colour palette mirrors the facade and the richly decorated interior, while wallpaper patterns, brocade antiques, and landscaped gardens inspire the floral prints, jacquards, and embellishments throughout the collection.
