PUTRAJAYA: As Malaysia embraces the era of digital technology, the public has been urged to equip themselves with consumer's knowledge to avoid being cheated online.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) deputy minister Datuk Henry Sum Agong (pix) said knowledge on the aspects of social, economy and the current environment was vital as they face an increasingly challenging consumerism world.
"The government will continue its best efforts and remain committed in implementing various initiatives and action plans to help champion consumer rights.
"Having said that, the rakyat should also be clear of the powers and rights they hold, be smart in making decisions and take appropriate actions when being cheated online," he said after officiating the 2017 World Consumer Rights Day, here, today.
Henry also noted a previous media report claiming Malaysia to be a fast growing nation digitally with online purchases reaching RM3.1 million in the last six months.
According to a recent update by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), there were some seven million online shoppers each month in 2015.
This year's Consumer Rights Day is themed "Building a Digital World Consumers Can Trust" with the aim of exposing consumers to their rights in the digital world and the use of technology as a medium to communicate.
