KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional's (BN) Sarawak parliamentarians have not come to a decision on whether they would support the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said it was still premature for the issue to be decided when it was still unknown whether the bill brought by PAS' president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang would see the light of day in Parliament.
The Santubong MP stated that the issue had been discussed with Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Abang Openg.
"The new chief minister has not established anything so we are waiting for a decision from BN. We will make our stand based on the stand in Sarawak," he told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby.
Wan Junaidi said the stand of Sarawak's parliamentarians would only be decided when the time comes and the bill is tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
"We will wait because it has not been tabled yet. We will be informed when it is there in the Dewan Rakyat. I don't want to cross a bridge before I reach it," he said.
The Syariah act, better known as Act 355, was due to be tabled in the current Parliament sitting.
