DBKL initiates motorcycle priority zones

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is currently implementing its new traffic restructuring plan by creating special motorcycle stop zones in some traffic light locations in the capital.
The plan whereby the motorcycle zones will be painted in red and white is set as a location marker for motorcyclists to stop temporarily while waiting for the change of traffic lights.
Under the plan motorcyclists are no longer allowed to stop outside the marked zone while other vehicles must stop behind the marked area.
Kuala Lumpur city mayor Datuk Seri Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said the plan was to safeguard pedestrians and ensure that motorcyclists stop their machines safely.
"Hopefully through DBKL's latest initiative, I hope that road crime cases such as snatch thefts through the breaking of car windows can be reduced," he told a press conference here Wednesday.
Currently, he said the city council has devised the motorcycle zones at three locations at Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Perak.
"We will be creating a new motorcycle zone every month at areas, we have identified as motorcycle hotspots. The hotspots will each have the special zone measuring 20 feet which can accommodate more than 20 motorcycles at any one time," he said, adding that DBKL would be targeting Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman among other locations to create the special zones.
While DBKL would offer a three-month period to road users to get used to the new zones, Mhd Amin Nordin said those who fail to comply with the directive afterwards will be fined between RM50 to RM100.
