BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 19-year-old woman who drove against traffic flow and allegedly caused the death of a man on Tuesday was charged with drug abuse at the magistrate's court today.
Ng Pei Ven claimed trial to taking Amphetamines, an offence under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which is punishable under Section 15 (1) of the same act.
If convicted, she faces a maximum jail term of two years or a fine of up to RM5,000.
Prosecuting Officer ASP Md Azman Kadir asked for bail to be fixed at RM8,000 and for Ng's driving license to be suspended.
Ng who was not represented pleaded for a lower bail amount.
She told the court that she was unemployed and was currently staying with her parents.
She added that her father worked as a motorcycle mechanic while her mom was an insurance agent.
Magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap granted bail at RM5,000 with two sureties and ordered Ng to report to the Central Seberang Prai police headquarters once a week.
Jamaliah fixed May 12 for mention.
Meanwhile when contacted by theSun, Central Seberang Prai police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the four-day remand against Ng for the traffic case had expired.
He said the investigation papers on the accident has been submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.
Nik Ros Azhan also said Ng's driving license was not suspended, as police do not have the authority to do so.
"Her driving license can be suspended if she is charged under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
In the 7.50am incident, Ng allegedly made a U-turn at KM128 of the North South Expressway (NSE) when she claimed she saw a stalled lorry.
The U-turn resulted in her going against traffic flow and she grazed against three vehicles but continued driving. The drivers of the three vehicles suffered light injuries.
She continued to drive for some 5km against traffic before crashing into the car driven by Mohamad Fandi Rosli, 26, at KM134 of the NSE killing him on the spot.
