PUTRAJAYA: The number of patients suffering kidney problems from stage one to stage five is now estimated to have reached 400,000, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahya.
Out of this number, 40,000 are those suffering stage five and need dialysis treatment while the rest are in stage one to four.
"The number of Malaysians suffering kidney problems is 200 cases for every one million people.
"The figure can increase each year if there are no measures to prevent obesity problems," he told reporters after officiating the World Kidney Day at the National Level at Taman Botani, here today.
Carrying the theme 'Kidney Diseases and Obesity', the programme aimed to promote healthy lifestyle to avoid obesity by doing physical exercises such as cycling, jogging and maintaining a healthy diet.
Dr Hilmi added that more than 6,000 new cases of kidney diseases were detected each year. — Bernama
