Poor drainage causes floods in housing areas in Johor

KULAI: Several housing estates in Bukit Batu experienced flash floods on Saturday evening after heavy rainfall.
Taman Wedo, Taman Sawit Ria, Taman Palma and Kelapa Sawit low-cost houses were hit with water rising to one metre from 6pm to 8pm.
Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said in a statement that the flood was caused by the poor drainage system and water retention pond.
"One water retention pond was leaking, another pond at the road side was too shallow, and the heavy rain caused the water in the ponds to overflow to the main Kulai-Ayer Hitam Road," he said.
"To prevent a recurrence, the Johor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) will carry out a river deepening project of small rivers nearby annually," he added.
"Every housing developer must ensure the drainage system has the capacity to cope with heavy rainfall, and should not cause floods in other housing estates," Ayub said.
