KUALA LUMPUR: A police officer told the Sessions Court here today that the body of Datuk Syed Alman Zain Syed Alwi, who died on June 1, 2016, while receiving dental treatment was identified by his wife, Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid and a close friend.
Brickfields police headquarters' Crime Branch officer ASP Ezral Ezwani Abdul Mali said the identification was made at the mortuary of the Forensics Department at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).
"Besides the wife of the victim, the body was also identified by a close friend of the victim, Datuk Faizal," he said when questioned by deputy public prosecutor Rozaliana Zakaria here, today.
The sixth prosecution witness was testifying at the second day obstetrics and gynecology (O&G) specialist Dr Ting Teck Chin's trial.
He is charged with causing the death of Syed Alman Zain, the son-in-law of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, during a dental procedure.
"After the identification process was completed, I informed the district police chief of the (sudden death) case and opened an investigation to do an autopsy to determine the cause of death," said Ezral Ezwani, who was serving as the Pantai police station chief at the time of the incident.
However, he said, forensic experts who conducted the autopsy did not specify the cause of death.
Ezral Ezwani said on June 3, 2016, he received three specimens containing two urine samples and one blood sample belonging to the victim from UMMC, which was then taken to Travers police station.
He told the court that the sudden death case was then investigated as a criminal case and Investigating Officer ASP Yusmazatu Yahya Yusof was tasked with handling the case.
On Aug 12, Dr Ting, 36, who served as a part-time anesthetist at the Imperial Dental Specialist Centre, pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death to Syed Alman Zain, 44, knowing that his actions could cause the victim's death.
Dr Ting, who serves in the O&G department at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, is accused of committing the offence at Imperial Dental Specialist Centre, Lot 62 & 64, Jalan Telawi, Bangsar Baru, Brickfields here, between 6pm and 9.05pm, on June 1, 2016.
Represented by counsel Dev Kumaraendran, Dr Ting was charged under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Syed Alman Zain reportedly lost consciousness while undergoing treatment at the dental specialist centre, and was referred to the University Malaya Medical Centre before being pronounced dead.
Also called to testify today were two police photographers, Lance Corporal Mohd Faiz Sopian and Corporal Syed Mastri Syed Ishak. The trial before Judge Zaman Mohd Noor resumes March 27. — Bernama
