KUALA LUMPUR: Own a bungalow or semi-detached house for just below RM100,000 each.
In today's reality, it is just a dream for most people but not the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.
Called the 'Rumah Impian Sultan Ibrahim', the sultan said for a start, 1,840 homes, including bungalow and semi-detached house would be built in phases at three locations in Johor.
During an exclusive interview with the Media Prima Bhd Group at the Flintstone Palace in Mersing recently, he said he wanted to address the plight of his subjects who were unable to own houses, even affordable houses.
He described the project as a special gift from him to Johoreans in conjunction with his 59th birthday.
The unit with a floor area of 1,100 sq feet and three rooms is for Johoreans who cannot afford to buy a house, those who do not own a house and those from the low-income group.
The sultan was reported to have assured his subjects of the good quality of the houses although the price was relatively cheap, and he was even willing to bear the losses, if any, for the sake of the people.
"I will make sure these house are of good quality. The roofing trusses would not be made of wood, but instead, we will use galvanised steel.
"The doors would not be made of cheap plywood, and it must be made of more durable material. I do not want to build low-quality homes because that would be embarrassing. I want the people to be satisfied with the quality of the homes," he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times (NST).
Sultan Ibrahim said profit from the sale of the shop lots would subsidise the houses.
The sultan expects the project to shake up the housing industry and force private developers to bring down house prices.
The ruler was willing to expand the project if the government wanted to follow the concept.
"If this Sultan Ibrahim Dream House project becomes a reality across the country, and if I get the federal (government's) support to build houses for the people nationwide, I will do it without taking a single sen as profit. Let the people have homes," the Sultan of Johor was quoted as saying by the English daily.
He felt the current houses were over-priced, even the affordable houses were too high for some people as they could only afford to look at them.
