IPOH: It was short lived freedom for a suspect who managed to escape from the lock-up at the court building here before he was re-arrested two hours later.
A. Kaliswaran, 26, managed to give police the slip at 4.45pm.
Ipoh City police chief ACP Sum Chang Keong said the suspect was spotted hiding in a river at Silibin and a police team which launched "Ops Tutup" after the incident detained him at 6.40pm.
"The man from Buntong was being taken out of the lock-up after he was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code for possessing a stolen car and Section 25(1)(n) of the National Registration Regulation 1990 for not carrying a MyKad.
"He was offered a RM4,000 bail but could not come up with the amount.
"As he was escorted out from the lock-up to a truck with 22 other detainees, he slipped his handcuffs and pushed three police personnel aside before making a dash for it.
"The suspect climbed over a fence and escaped into some bushes near the railway station," he told reporters after witnessing the handing over ceremony of the new Ipoh City crime chief here today.
Former Kuala Kangsar district crime chief DSP Rasdi Ariffin took over from DSP Rodney Pasla Haris who was transferred to the Bukit Aman police headquarters.
Sum said the case is being investigated under Section 223/224 of the Penal Code while the three policemen will be investigated and disciplinary action taken if there is proof of negligence.
Kaliswaran's dash for freedom went viral on social media after photos purportedly of him clad only in his briefs was widely shared.
Police however have declined to comment if the suspect had stripped to his briefs.
