Farquhar Museum to undergo extensive renovation

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang State Museum, located at Farquhar Street, will be closed for two years beginning April 15 for extensive renovations, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Lim said the Penang State Museum Board and its partner, the George Town Conservation and Development Corporation (GTDC) had embarked on the conservation and renovation works.
He said critical infrastructure upgrades of the historic building is expected to be completed by 2019.
"The building has served the community for more than 200 years and it has not been substantially restored and upgraded since its inception in 1817.
"The goal of the renovation is not only to restore a historic icon, but also to create a modern museum equipped to function as an important cultural resource for the community," he told reporters during a press conference at his office in Komtar here.
Lim said the exhibits and artifacts from the Farquhar Museum would be temporarily exhibited at the State Museum branch at Jalan Macalister from July this year.
