KUANTAN: The number of people suffering from obesity-related kidney disease in Pahang is becoming increasingly serious.
State Health Department director, Dr Shaari Ngadiman said that as of March, there were about 2,000 kidney patients undergoing haemodialysis in Pahang, including 500 patients using the Health Ministry's facilities and the rest using private and non-governmental organisations' facilities.
"Although there is no exact figures in this case, the observations found that most kidney patients have obesity problem and this cannot be underestimated.
"In addition to facing the risk of chronic kidney disease, patients are also prone to diabetes and high blood pressure," he said after opening the state-level World Kidney Day commemoration themed "Kidney Disease and Obesity" at Taman Bandar, Indera Mahkota, here, today.
He said obesity caused the kidneys to work harder to filter the blood in addition to meeting the demands of increased metabolic weight.
"This year alone, there have been 201 new patients who started haemodialysis and 45 patients using the continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)," he said. — Bernama
