GEORGE TOWN: An elderly woman who suffered a stroke on board a cruise ship was successfully evacuated to land by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Monday evening.
MMEA Martime District Two director Captain Rozali Mohd Said said the woman was a Singapore national.
He said the cruise was on the way from Penang to Phuket, Thailand, when the MMEA received a distress call about 7.35pm.
He said a speedboat was immediately despatched to the site, about 4.1 nautical miles north off the Penang island coast, to evacuate the woman.
He said the woman was safely ferried to the Fisheries Department at Teluk Bahang about two hours later.
"An ambulance took her to the Balik Pulau Hospital," he said in a statement today.
Rozali also took the opportunity to urge maritime operators to take precautions and the public to inform the authorities of any accidents or criminal activities.
