KUALA LUMPUR: The overall cost spent by the government to build the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) service cannot be recovered through fare collection alone.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the MRT construction was part of the government's long term plan to improve the standard of public transportation in the Greater Kuala Lumpur area.
She added the rail construction was one of the six items in the National Key Result Areas that was given priority under the Government Transformation Programme.
"As a responsible government, we realise that we cannot recover the investment return which was spent to construct the MRT through fare collection," she told the Dewan Rakyat during the Minister's Question Time.
She was responding to a question posed by Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR - Lembah Pantai) who asked about the details of the mechanism used in setting the fares for the MRT service.
