PETALING JAYA: The Higher Education Ministry's first batch of the Gap Year programme will commence later this year involving two universities and four civil services agencies.
Its minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh (pix) said that under the programme, undergraduates from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) can take a year off their studies to work for the selected four civil service agencies - the police, national service programme, armed forces and the civil defence department.
"What we are trying to implement is a Gap Year National Service Programme with the civil service agencies where interested undergraduates can sign up with those agencies and undertake training with them and when they complete the training module, these undergraduates can then start working with those agencies," Idris said on the sidelines of the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (Asli) 21st Malaysian Education Summit today.
He added that the ministry is hoping to cultivate patriotism and volunteerism among the students through this programme.
Idris said more details will be announced at a later date as the ministry is still fine-tuning the details of the programme which is scheduled to start in September.
