PETALING JAYA: Police rescued a newborn baby believed to have been dumped in the stairwell of an apartment building here.
Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Mohd Zani Che Din said the baby was found in a mineral water bottle box, at 9.10pm on Monday.
"We were alerted after a 17-year-old girl, an occupant in the building discovered the baby.
"The girl, who is now classified as a witness, lives on the ninth floor, and had just gotten out of the lift and was on her way to her apartment when she heard the baby crying," he said today.
Initially, she was in the lift and upon reaching her destination, she was alerted by the cries coming from the stairwell and found the baby in a box between the eight and ninth floor.
Mohd Zani said the girl's mother then contacted the police.
The investigators rushed the baby to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.
"Following an interview with the medical staff who treated the baby, we were told that the baby is now in stable condition and DNA samples have been taken," he added.
A police team are working on identifying the identity of the baby's mother.
