Gallows for lorry driver who trafficked drugs

IPOH: A lorry driver was sentenced to death by the High Court here for trafficking 2.7kg of cannabis in Parit Buntar more then two years ago.
Wan Mohamad Lufti Jaffar, 34, from Jalan Baru, Parit Buntar is also currently serving a jail term for possession of 34gm of cannabis during the same time.
Family members in the court were seen weeping and hugging the accused after the sentence was handed down.
The prosecution called six witnesses to testify while the defence produced two witnesses.
The defence will appeal against the death sentence.
Judge Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali said the prosecution established a prima facie case beyond reasonable doubts.
He said: "The prosecution managed to give the facts and reasons to charge the suspect.
"The defence's argument that there was another person known as (Madi)at the scene of the crime, was merely a denial and shifting the blame on others who did not exist.
"The accused was the only person at the place and the drugs were found in the basket of the motorcycle.
DPP Harris Ong Mohd Jeffery Ong appeared for the prosecution while Khairil Khalil represented the accused.
The accused was charged with trafficking 2.748kg of cannabis in front of GD Express Sdn Bhd premise at 213, Jalan Taiping, Parit Buntar at 12.10pm on July 26, 2014.
He committed the offence under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
The accused was also charged for possession of 34gm of heroin at the same place, date and time under Section 39A(1) of the same Act.
He was sentenced to three years imprisonment and ordered five strokes of the rotan for the second offence.
His jail term began from the date of arrest.
