MRT fares will be reviewed every five years

KUALA LUMPUR: The parliament was told the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) fare will be revised every five years.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Nancy Shukri (pix), however, said the revision would not necessarily mean that there would be a fare hike after the process.
"The revision will be taking into consideration several matters such as current cost, insurance, vehicle maintenance, cost of electric usage and maintenance of depot station," she said.
"A lot of matters involving cost management need to be taken into consideration as we need to improve the current system in MRT," she added.
Nancy said the government had looked thoroughly at various factors in deciding the fare of public transportation so that it would be fair, competitive and affordable.
She said the money the government spent to build the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in the Klang Valley could not be recovered through fare collection alone.
"As a responsible government, we realise that we cannot recover the investment return which was spent to construct MRT through fare collection," she told Dewan Rakyat during the Minister's Question Time.
