3 cops charged with corruption

JOHOR BARU: Three policemen claimed trial at a Sessions Court here for corruption charges today.
Constable Rhomarino Rafie, 33, was charged under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 for demanding RM10,000 from Zanariah Mat to release Wan Karmizi Muhammad from detention, at the Johor Baru Selatan headquarters, at 2pm on Dec 19, 2015. Wan Karmizi was arrested on Dec 19, 2015.
He was also charged with demanding RM 7,000 from Zanariah to release Wan Karmizi from detention, at a restaurant in front of the Johor Baru Selatan headquarters, at 5pm on Dec 21, 2015.
Inspector Isa Ahmad, 30, is charged with demanding RM1,000 from Zanariah to release Wan Karmizi from detention, at Johor Baru Selatan headquarters, at 3.30pm on Dec 23, 2015.
Rhomarino and Isa were alleged to have received RM18,000 from Zanariah. ( Rhomarino RM17,000 and Isa RM1,000)
Meanwhile, Logeshvaran L Segaran, 31, a policeman stationed at Pendas General Operation Force, was charged with allegedly demanding RM2,000 from S. Ravi, 49, so as to not take action against him for hiring illegal foreign workers, at a petrol station at Taman Nusa Perintis in Gelang Patah at 2pm on June 12 last year.
He was also charged with receiving the money from Ravi at the same place on the same date at around 4.40pm.
The three policemen were charged under Section 16 (A)(B) of the MACC Act (Act 694) and Section 17(A) of the same Act, and could be punished under Section 24 where if convicted, they can face maximum 20 years' jail and a fine up to five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever higher.
Sessions Court judge Kamarudin Kasmun set bail at RM8,000 each and fixed May 8 for case management.
The case was prosecuted by MACC prosecuting officer Ridzuan Abd Malek.
Isa was represented by two lawyers, Muhammad Ashraff Mohd Diah and Mohamad Isa Mohamad Basir while. Rhomarino was represented by lawyer Mohd Asram Zakaria. Logeshvaran was unrepresented.
