KUALA LUMPUR: Two Islamic State (IS) supporters were put behind bars for 25 years by a High Court today for committing a terrorist act by throwing a hand grenade at the Movida night club on June 28, last year, causing injuries to eight people.
High Court judge Datuk Nordin Hassan sentenced Imam Wahyudin Karjono, 20, and Jonius Ondie @ Jahali, 24, a Muslim convert from Sabah to jail. He ordered their jail terms to run from their dates of arrest on June 29, 2016 and July 1, 2016, respectively after they pleaded guilty to terror related charges.
Nordin also ordered another 10 years' jail for each accused for supporting the IS through a "Telegram" group called "black crow". However, Nordin ordered both the sentences to run concurrently from their date of arrest.
In delivering the sentence, Nordin said: "This case is a serious one in Malaysia, whereby you (both) admit throwing the grenade, causing injuries to eight people, some sustaining serious injuries," said Nordin.
Nordin said some of the injuries were permanent and some could not move their fingers or remove the grenade shrapnel from their bodies.
"This case involves violence and it is a very serious act," said Nordin.
He said the objective of the sentencing is to send a signal to others, including the accused's comrades, who are continuing their actions, which they feel is right," said Nordin. He said the court needed to impose a deterrent sentence.
"Your act had caused chaos in Malaysia, whereby such an act had never taken place before. Throwing a grenade is a serious act and it is the responsibility of a judge to impose a sentence to deter such acts (in the future)," said Nordin.
On July 25, 2016, Imam from Puchong and Jonius Ondie @ Jahali, 24, were charged with hurling and exploding a hand grenade, "Fuze M213" at Movida Kitchen, Bar, Club and Lounge at Jalan Kenari 5, Bandar Puchong Jaya, Puchong at 2am on June 28, 2016.
