Catching street litterbugs in the act

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council has turned to camera technology to nab litterbugs.
Councillor Ong Ah Teong said nine portable closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed at several locations here to catch litterbugs in the act.
He said once a litterbug was recorded committing the act, on-site officers will be alerted.
"The video will be sent to the officer as proof and the officer will look for the person and issue a RM250 compound on the spot," the Licensing and Public Health alternate chairman told a press conference today.
Ong said council officers have recorded 22 littering incidents since the portable units were installed last month.
"We have issued 10 compounds so far, the rest could not be traced," he said, and urged the public to do their part to ensure a clean Penang.
On another anti-littering effort, Ong said teams of enforcers will be patrolling tourist spots to ensure the cleanliness.
