Selangor mulling impounding illegal entertainment centres

SHAH ALAM: Selangor is contemplating impounding illegal entertainment centres in the state in its bid to curb recurring cases of gambling involving the same premises.
State Local Government Committee chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah said this was one of several amendments to the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1995 the state government is studying and planning to table in the near future.
He however said the state has to also take into account federal laws so as not to have conflicting regulations.
Ean was responding to a question from Dr Idris Ahmad (PKR-Ijok) on whether the state plans to impound entertainment premises, considering these businesses would continue running despite having being served with notices and have their gambling machines confiscated.
"I really welcome Ijok's suggestion. Having said that, we should also take into account the provision under the National Land Code so as not to have any discrepancies," he said at the state legislative assembly, here, today.
Ean also noted that the proposal to amend the enactment was still at an early stage and that it was still being studied.
He added that jurisdiction of the local councils pertaining to actions that can be taken on these illegal premises is limited, with more of the power under the police.
