Selangor yet to decide on ECRL project

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has not come to a conclusive decision over the federal government's East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, where roughly 80km of its main line would cut through the state.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (pix) said the state government had only had one discussion with the project's steering committee on Jan 25 this year.
He added that any large-scale project implicating Selangor must go through negotiations with the state government, in accordance with Section 20A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1976.
"Under the provision, every federal government agency or department must negotiate with the state planning committee on any development activity that needs to be implemented.
"However, the discussion has not fulfilled the provision under Section 20A and there has not been any decision given by the state government in relation to the project's development," he said during his winding up speech at the State Legislative Assembly meeting today.
The ECRL project, which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak last year, will involve railway construction of 600km connecting Klang Valley and the east coast.
Damansara Utama assemblyman Yeo Bee Yin on Thursday had urged the state government not to cooperate on the project until the details are made known.
Mohamed Azmin said the state government welcomes any proposal to construct efficient and systematic public transportation infrastructure in Selangor.
However, he said any project proposed to the state government must prove beneficial to the people of Selangor.
