A MALAYSIAN has earned RM700,000 in 19 months through an online marketplace, proving her doubting husband who called her crazy wrong.
"My husband said I was crazy to do online business," Shopee Seller of the Year winner Te Mei Hong was quoted by a Malaysian news portal as saying. "He asked me who would give me money online. Now he sings a different tune."
She is now RM700,000 richer after selling on Shopee for 19 months.
Shopee announced Te Mei Hong as its Seller of the Year on March 31. She joined Shopee in September 2015 and got off to a moderate start. Her first month earnings was RM3,000 to RM4,000, which she said was good enough for her.
Her children found that she was spending too much time on her work. "Other than my husband, my kids also don't like me working 24 hours on my computer because I don't have time for them," said the 39-year-old Te.
"I'm doing everything myself at the moment, including packing. Sometimes I go without sleep. This was especially so when I ran about five to seven campaigns whereby I sold products at RM1 only. Those three months were madness.
"I got aches and pains in my arm from writing all the documentation manually. Everybody said I was crazy to sell my stock so cheaply, but I saw it as advertising costs that were necessary to make myself known, so that people would remember me."
Despite her success, Te won't be resting on her laurels. She has set her sights on even bigger things.
"I want to hire some assistants. I also want to look into my chat response which is a bit poor right now. I can go further and grow faster as I still have about 10 more years before I retire."
