KUALA LUMPUR: Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad (pix) has questioned the Attorney-General's Chamber's decision to charge his alleged assaulters under the Minor Offences Act 1955.
In stating his disappointment, Khalid said he would be writing to the AG's office to review the charges on the eight individuals, who were charged at the KL magistrate's court today.
"The charge under Section 14 of the Act only gives out a maximum punishment of RM100 fine," he said.
"This is an insult not only to the Member of Parliament but also to the Parliament institution," he told a press conference at Parliament's media centre.
Khalid was attacked by a mob, believed to be supporters of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Tajudin Abdul Rahman, as the former was walking to the main Parliament building on Nov 24.
Also believed to be part of the attackers was Tajudin's son.
The attack was a result of a heated argument involving Tajudin and Khalid in the Dewan Rakyat following an alleged rude remark made by Tajudin days earlier.
Two of the individuals charged were Firdaus Tajudin and Faizal Tajudin, who Khalid suspected were both related to the deputy minister.
Khalid added all the suspects pleaded not guilty when the charges were read in court.
He believes his case was downplayed by the authorities as it involved individuals related to a member of the Cabinet.
He said he would also be writing to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia for appropriate action to be taken against his attackers.
