PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) will investigate the North-South Expressway accident on Sunday that killed six people.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Miros has been directed to probe the cause of the accident and the road-worthiness of the trailer that crashed into the victims' multi-purpose vehicle.
The driver of the north-bound trailer, laden with earth, was believed to have lost control of the vehicle.
He was detained after the accident and was found to have a record of eight driving offences and a criminal case.
Hulu Selangor district police chief Supt R. Supramaniam said the 27-year old driver from Kedah is being investigated under Section 41(1) Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving, and faces two to ten years' jail and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000.
Supramaniam said checks showed the driver had been involved in accidents in the Kampar and Kuala Pilah districts before last Sunday's crash.
Liow in a statement yesterday said the ministry is in the midst of establishing the Malaysian Transport Safety Board to conduct independent and transparent investigations on safety, research recommendations to improve safety and evaluate safety initiatives in all modes of transport.
