KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and seven environmental protection non-governmental organisations (NGOs)formed a strategic pact today in the sharing of information to counter corruption and power abuse linked to environmental pollution.
The meeting led to the pact being named as the Environmental Protection and Anti-Corruption Caucus (EPACC) with both parties agreeing to closely cooperate and share information on issues such as illegal logging, illegal land clearing, and the pollution of river and eco-system.
The pact agreed in the meeting that was chaired by MACC commissioner Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad that it was critical of the issue to be viewed seriously and at the same time see the commission act swiftly against those who solicit bribes to turn a blind eye to environmental pollution.
The NGOs involved in the pact are Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka), Rimba Research, Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), Persatuan Aktivis Shahabat Alam (Kuasa), the Energy and Chemistry Engineering Faculty of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Pusat Sains dan Alam Sekitar (Kias) and Institut Kesefahaman Islam Malaysia (Ikim).
