KUALA LUMPUR: Bystanders joined forces and nabbed four Pakistani men who tried to steal a bundle of RM50 from a civil servant on the pretext of helping her at a bank in Taman Maluri, Cheras on Monday.
The incident occurred when the 53-year-old woman had gone to a Maybank branch with her child to deposit RM3,000 through a cash deposit machine (CDM) at about 5.30pm.
Cheras police chief ACP Chong Kok Sin said the victim had put the cash into the CDM but a RM50 bill was rejected.
He said as the woman encountered difficulty inserting the banknote, she made another attempt to insert it into the machine.
Chong said the four suspects who were well dressed and whom the victim did not know showed up behind her.
He said a suspect snatched the RM50 bill from the woman's hand - purportedly to assist her with the deposit - but the victim snatched it back from him.
Chong said another suspect then pressed a button on the CDM to cancel the transaction, causing the remaining cash of RM2,950 to be ejected from the machine.
He said the earlier suspect again grabbed the RM50 the woman was holding to distract her while his accomplice took the wad of cash from the CDM.
Chong said as the foreigners fled the bank, other customers who noticed the theft gave chase and managed to apprehend all four Pakistanis.
Two of the suspects suffered head injuries when they put up a struggle when the public tried to nab them.
They were sent to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital (HUKM) for treatment.
Chong said police learnt that the four men had gone to the bank in a car that was found with a broken rear windscreen.
He clarified it was not a stolen car.
He said the suspects have been remanded and are being probed for gang robbery.
