KUALA LUMPUR: The most controversial amendment connected to Hudud law implementation is first on the order paper today.
Four other bills of proposed amendments, which were on the order paper yesterday, have been deferred to the next session.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s Private Member's Bill to empower the Syariah Courts jurisdiction is expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat immediately after the question and answer session.
There is no government order or business listed in the order of the day to make way for his proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act or known as RUU355.
Abdul Hadi had proposed amendments to Section 2 of RUU355 to increase the current "imprisonment of more than three years or fine of more than RM5,000, or more than six lashes" to "jail term of more than 30 years or fine more than RM100,000 or 100 lashes as administered in line with the Syariah crimes".
Yesterday’s session ended at almost 5am after the government bulldozed two bills past midnight.
The session, which was supposed to adjourn at 11.30pm last night, was later extended until the Consumer Protection (Amendment) Bill 2017 and Tourism Tax Bill 2017 were passed amidst shouting matches and en bloc vote.
Four other bills - Domestic Violence (Amendments) Bill 2017, Land Public Transport (Amendment) Bill 2017, Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (Amendment) Bill 2017 and the much awaited Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendments) Bill 2016 – were all deferred to the next session, while the Stamp (Amendments) Bill 2016 was withdrawn.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Seri Pandikar Amin Mulia had adamantly refused to accept objections from the Opposition MPs to adjourn the session as it is not “fruitful” and “reasonable” to continue the proceeding at wee hours discussing policies affecting the country and people.
He had repeatedly said “it is the government’s will” (ia adalah kehendak kerajaan) to all the objections and concerns raised by the Opposition MPs including health reasons and the need for at least five hours of rest before the next session.
