GEORGE TOWN: Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey today expressed her concern over the safety of pedestrians in the state.
She said statistics by police showed that 354 and 353 pedestrians were involved in road accidents in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
"We believe the number is higher as not all accidents are reported and the data from hospitals and police do not match," she said in a press conference at her service centre here today.
She said policy and actions of local councils and councillors has resulted in the unsafe and unfriendly environment for pedestrians which includes approving development without consideration for walking needs and safety and also not installing pedestrians traffic lights.
She also pointed out that road designs encourage speeding.
"Since Penang is a small urbanised state, it is impossible for people to expect to drive quickly to their destination.
"Even on roads that have been built straight and wide, the ability of cars to accelerate is very limited as they will soon hit a bottleneck," she said, adding that the objective of traffic planning should be to provide smooth traffic flow and not to start and stop acceleration that only creates frustration.
She also urged the local, state and federal governments to take responsibility for the welfare of pedestrians by designing more friendly and safer roads for them.
Yap earlier highlighted an accident in her constituency that involved a 60-year old woman who was run down by a motorcycle when she was using the pedestrian crossing at traffic light along Jalan Burma.
She said that although the pedestrian traffic light was already showing green, the motorcyclist continue to squirm his way in between cars and revved straight into the woman crossing the road.
She said according to witnesses, the woman fell to the ground and hit her head on the road.
The condition of the victim who is now is at the hospital is unknown.
When contacted, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said the council is moving forward to build more pedestrian-centric roads.
Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid when contacted confirmed a woman sustained serious head injuries and broken left leg after being involved in a hit-and-run accident at Jalan Burma today.
He said the victim was hit by a motorcycle and has been rushed to the Penang Hospital.
"She is in the emergency ward," he said, adding the case is being investigated for reckless driving under the Road Transport Act 1987.
