Huge increase in diabetes cases

KUALA LUMPUR: The prevalence of diabetes is expected to increase among Malaysians in the next two decades.
Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pix) said that according to the latest National Health Morbidity Survey (NHMS) that was released in 2015, the number of diabetes patients aged 18 and above has shown a huge increase.
"In 1996, the survey showed that the prevalence of diabetes is only 8.3% but in 2015, the figure has increased to 17.3% – almost a two fold increase – something which is quite alarming.
"A sedentary lifestyle and love for food might be the cause that exacerbates the increase," Noor Hisham said prior to officiating the Malaysian Diabetes Educators Conference 2017.
