Sungai Pahang victim's body recovered near graveyard

PEKAN: The body of a 33-year-old man who drowned after jumping into Sungai Pahang two days ago was found afloat about 50m from the riverbank near the Kampung Ketapang cemetery.
Ahmad Shaifullah Abdul Rahman's remains were found at 11.30pm, about two kilometres from the incident spot, by his younger brother Ahmad Jauhari Abdul Rahman, 25, who had mounted a search with three friends in two boats.
"The body was taken to Pekan Hospital for post-mortem and the case is classified as drowning," Pekan police chief Supt Amran Sidek said when contacted by Bernama here today.
He said there was no element of crime on the body which had been claimed by a family member for burial.
In the incident at 4pm on Monday, the victim was fishing with a friend on the riverbank near Kampung Pulau Engin when they were reportedly taken by surprise when police showed up.
They were reported to have swum about 200m to the middle of the river before the victim disappeared while his friend managed to swim to safety. — Bernama
