BUTTERWORTH: The mainland leg of the "I Love Penang" run today has entered the Malaysia Book of Records for the most number of participants in the fun run category.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the effort of the 15,942 participants created the record and thanked those who joined the 7am event.

He said those who signed up showed they loved Penang.

"We will always walk, run with Penang together," he said in his speech before flagging off the participants for the 6km route at Dewan Ahmad Badawi here.

Lim also received a certificate from the Malaysia Book of Records to certify the record-breaking run.

The chief minister also took part in the run and was joined by his Exco members Lim Hock Seng and Phee Boon Poh as well as several government officials.

The "I Love Penang" campaign was launched by the state government in February to object against the suggestion by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to make the state a Federal Territory.

The island leg of the run was held on March 12 at Lebuh Pantai, which saw some 6,000 participants.
