Police arrest 196 'Mat Rempit' in Kuantan

KUANTAN: Police arrested 196 motorcyclists, including a drug addict believed to be involved in an illegal race at Batu 3, Jalan Kuantan-Gambang here early this morning.
Kuantan district police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Salleh said all the riders, aged between 19 and in their 30s, were detained in an operation carried out from 1pm to 5am to curb illegal racing.
"The drug addict, a 19-year-old unemployed youth was arrested for dangerous riding and attempting to escape," he said when contacted here today.
He also tested positive for the drug syabu and was handed over to the Narcotics Division of the Kuantan district police headquarters (IPD) to be investigated, Abdul Aziz said.
Police, he said, issued 85 summonses for various offences such as not having a driver's licence, expired road tax, registration numbers not in accordance with specifications, not pasting the P and L stickers and not having side mirrors.
He said police also seized 29 motorcycles to be investigated under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987. — Bernama
