GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is unperturbed by Umno wanting to table a motion demanding his resignation pending the completion of his trial for graft when the state legislature convenes next month.
He said Penang practised democracy and the state opposition was free to table a motion asking for his resignation.
He pointed out previous motions tabled by the state opposition were allowed for debate.
The Bagan MP said this was unlike Parliament where only motions supported by Barisan Nasional (BN), the ruling coalition, were allowed for debate but opposition motions were not.
"It is up to the Speaker (Datuk Law Choo Kiang) to decide, the state government has no objections," he said in a press conference today.
Lim was responding to Umno Penang instructing State Legislature Opposition Leader Datuk Jahara Hamid to table the motion.
The tit for tat move comes after the Penang government said it plans to table a motion to censure Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shahbudin Yahya for his remarks on rapists marrying their victims last week which has drawn widespread condemnation.
Penang Umno chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman in a statement said the motion calling for Lim to resign will be tabled when the state legislature convenes on May 19.
He said Umno is of the view the state tabling a motion against Shahbudin is to "membalas dendam" (revenge) after the MP questioned the purchase of a bungalow by Lim leading to him being charged.
Lim however dismissed talk the proposed motion against Shahbudin was a form of revenge.
He said revenge would be tabling a motion against Shahbudin, the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) chairman, for allegedly selling land at below market price, but this was not tabled.
He said the proposed motion instead was to defend women and rape victims who should be treated with respect and decency.
Lim said the stand was against child marriage and that rapists should not marry their victims and called upon Wanita Umno to defend women.
