KUALA LUMPUR: The second phase of the Cheras Pudu Ulu Recreation Park, which was successfully completed is part of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL)'s way of giving back to the community, said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
"DBKL has a very detailed plan in providing such facilities for city residents. The development of public parks is also a sign of gratitude to the people whereby proceeds obtained by DBKL is channelled back to development," he said during the opening of the recreational park, here, today.
Also present at the event were Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin and several DBKL department heads.
The project which cost RM10.3 million features a wading pool for children, a 700m walking deck, as well as a central plaza that can host aerobics and zumba activities in the park.
Tengku Adnan said the park, spanning 13.35ha, was originally a vegetable farming area that the residents developed.
"The government however decided to develop the area as a public recreational park for the ease of the nearby residents.
"Now, I hope the people can assist us to help care for the park by becoming friends of the park," he said.
The first phase of the Chreas Pudu Ulu Recreation Park which cost RM20 million was completed in 2007.
Friends of Pudu Ulu Park group was created in 2013 to get the residents in the area to care for the park.
The recreation park is also set to host the 2017 Sea Games with petanque courts currently being built and will be ready for use by the national squad by June.
Meanwhile, DBKL Executive Director (Planning) Datuk Mohd Najib Mohd said the construction of the petanque courts is on schedule.
"The national squad will be utilising it from June onwards up to the Sea Games in August before it will be opened to the public," he said.
Petanque, a sport which originated from France is similar to lawn bowling with the exception that the boules (heavy balls either made of carbon or steel) used to play the game are tossed towards the jack rather then bowled on the surface.
Malaysia will be sending 16 players consisting eight men and women to participate in petanque in four categories namely singles, doubles, triples and mix doubles during the 29th edition of the Games hosted in the city.
