Three killed, one injured in construction site accident

KUALA LUMPUR (July 3, 2013): Three foreign workers perished in an accident at a construction site in Sierra Ukay, Ampang, while another was injured.

Two Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi are believed to have died on the spot, while another Myanmar national sustained injuries to both his legs when earth from a small side section of a two-metre high embankment fell on them at a housing construction site.

According to Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Operations assistant director Mohd Sani Harul who was at the scene today, his department received a call regarding the incident at 11.29am.

"We arrived at the scene at 11.50am. Two of the victims were retrieved by fellow workers while two others were dug out by the department. Our operations concluded at approximately 12.30pm," said Mohd Sani.

A spokesperson from IJM, the developer of the project, said the incident was a construction site accident and not a landslide.

Bukit Antarabangsa state assemblyman Azmin Ali who was at the site of the accident, said the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council had ordered for an immediate halt to construction works.

"There is no structural damage. This was a construction site accident, however an investigation will still be conducted by the Construction Industry Development Board," said Azmin.

The bodies of the workers have been sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for post-mortem, while the injured worker was sent to the Ampang hospital.
