Man sought for beating wife

GEORGE TOWN (Aug 14, 2013): Police are on the manhunt for a 36-year-old man who repeatedly assaulted his wife in a lift in a private hospital in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam on Monday.

The violent actions of the man had gone viral over the internet after the victim’s sister uploaded the incident on Tuesday. The origin of how she had obtained the footage is yet to be ascertained.

State CID chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said police are still tracking the 36-year-old civil servant from Jerantut, Pahang.

“Initial investigations showed that the couple were at the hospital to visit their eldest child who was warded for high fever. The man then suddenly hit his 36-year-old wife after entering the lift in the 4pm incident.

“It is too much for the husband to beat his wife like this,” he said at a press conference today, adding police will apply for an Interim Protection Order (IPO) to restrict the husband from going near his wife.

The two minute and twenty second recording, titled “Suami Dayus Pukul Isteri Dalam Lif Depan Anak” (Bastard husband beats wife in lift in front of children) has been widely shared and circulated on social networking sites.

The woman, a factory worker, when met by the media, admitted to having marital problems but said that this was the first time her husband had beaten her.

She said divorce proceedings were filed in July and that the couple had been living separately since December last year.

“Even so, he should not have acted aggressively, especially in front of the children,” she said.

The victim speculated that her husband become angry after the their second child did not want to follow him while at the hospital.

“He hit and kicked me without stopping when we were in the lift while saying ‘See you at the Syariah Court’,” she said and expressed her surprised that the video has gone viral and hoped that no one blamed her for what happened.

“I leave it to the authorities to take the necessary action,” the mother of three said.

The video showed the factory worker being repeatedly punched, slapped and kicked by her husband inside the lift in front of their children who are believed to be aged between four and five.

The incident has sparked an uproar among Netizens who strongly condemned the act and urged the authorities to come down hard on the man.

Mazlan said records show that the victim had lodged a police report forty minutes after the incident. He said the victim has since been admitted to receive treatment for injuries to her wrist, head and lips.

“We will apply for an Interim Protection Order (IPO) to restrict the husband from going anywhere near his wife,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt, which carries a maximum of one year's jail or RM2,000 fine or both if convicted.
