Chua, Gan to team up for party polls?

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 3, 2013): There are suggestions within MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek's faction that he will defend his post with vice-president Gan Ping Sieu as his running mate at the party election next month.

This Chua-Gan combination comes in the wake of Chua's failure to get his deputy Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai censured at the Oct 20 extraordinary general meeting and force the latter to opt out of contest together with him.

According to a report in Sin Chew Daily on Friday, Chua is not very keen to defend his post but his supporters are hoping that he will and have come up with the Chua-Gan combination mainly because his camp does not have anyone apart from Chua to take on Liow, who is going for the top post and is likely to team up with Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Chua is seen as crucial for his camp to stay in power.

However, since the party chief had announced on May 6, the day after the general election, that he was not going to seek re-election, his integrity would be questioned should he go back on his words. It would mean another blot on his character after the sex video incident.

As such, Chua may propose that he contest to become an interim president with the intention to pass the baton to a handpicked successor if he is elected.

According to MCA constitution, should the president give up his post for any reason, the deputy president will assume the duty of the party chief until the next party elections.
