WARSAW (Jan 2, 2013): An allegedly drunk driver plowed into a pedestrian zone in north-west Poland, killing six people including three members of one family.
A police spokesman said on Polish television that the victims were thrown several meters into the air when the car hit them in the town of Kamien Pomorski.
The dead included a policeman, his wife and their 9-year-old son.
The other two children in the family suffered life-threatening injuries.
The family was underway with three friends in the town centre's pedestrian zone as the driver sped onto the sidewalk and into the group.
Police said an alcohol test after the accident showed the driver had nearly two promille alcohol content, but the results of a blood test were not yet known.
Two promille is roughly the equivalent of eight to 10 glasses of beer, but the measurements vary from country to country and according to the percentage alcohol in the beer.
The 26-year-old driver was known to police for previous violations: When he was 19, he was arrested for drunk driving and his driver's license was suspended for a year in 2006. – DPA
