KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 8, 2014): A City Hall worker, who posed as a policeman in an attempt to rob two Nigerian undergraduates in an apartment in Taman Pusat Kepong, died at the Selayang hospital today after being beaten by the occupants who called four countrymen for help.
The 52-year-old’s accomplices – a former City Hall worker and a tow truck operator, both in their 40s – were also assaulted by the two foreigners. They received outpatient treatment.
Kuala Lumpur police deputy CID chief ACP Khairi Ahrasa said police are looking for the Nigerians to help in investigations. He said the three had posed as policemen to gain entry into the rented unit occupied by the foreigners, both aged 30.
The suspects had told the Nigerians that they were conducting checks on foreigners before ransacking the place.
Khairi said they pocketed RM5,000 they found in the house. However, while they continued to search for more valuables, one of the victim’s alerted his fellow countrymen who live in another unit at the same apartment.
Just minutes into the robbery, the friends arrived and in an ensuing struggle, they beat up the robbers before calling the police.
Khairi said the robbers were taken to the hospital where the City Hall worker, who sustained serious head injuries, succumbed to his injuries about eight hours later.
He said police had classified the City Hall worker’s death as murder.
He said police also recovered a pair of handcuffs, a crowbar and a police vest from the suspects who have previous criminal records for drug related offences, he told a press conference.
On the assault, he advised those making citizens’ arrest to use minimal force when apprehending criminals.
