KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 16, 2014): It was a day of good food and great fun for some 17,000 senior citizens as Sports Toto Malaysia kicked off the Chinese New Year festivities in 41 cities and towns nationwide.
About 3,000 senior citizens gathered during the launch of the 26th Sports Toto Chinese New Year Ang Pow Donation Campaign at the KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall and received ang pow packets and mini hampers, while being entertained by Wushu performances.
Sports Toto Malaysia executive director Vincent Seow said organising a campaign of such a large scale is no easy feat, but has always been a satisfying one.
"Being mindful of the increasing number of recipients with each passing year, the organising committee has made continuous improvements and modifications to ensure a smooth and fun event for the senior citizens here today," he said.
A whopping RM900,000 has been allocated for this donation campaign.
"Sports Toto can be a role model for other corporate bodies for their CSR (corporate social responsibility) campaigns. Senior citizens seldom need much. What they truly crave for is a little bit of care from those around them," said MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, who was the guest-of-honour at the event.
One of the elderly guests, who resides in a home for the aged, said he looked forward to such events, especially near festive seasons.
"I am not sure if my children would be taking me home for the celebrations this year. Events like this make my friends and me happy. These are some of the few things that make us smile these days. I hope they will have another one next year, and that I would be able to join in," he said.
