Some schools ignoring safety rules

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 23, 2014): Some schools nationwide are not strictly following the procedures set by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to ensure the wellbeing of students and teachers.
In expressing this concern yesterday, NIOSH chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said it is important to set in place safety measures for employees and students in schools as stipulated under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1974.
He also urged school authorities to ensure that the Public Works Department (PWD) follows the procedures under the Act.
Currently safety measures in schools are under the purview of the PWD, and school administrators can take up the programmes under NIOSH, he told a press conference after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of agreement between NIOSH and DuPont Malaysia here.
The agreement outlines a framework and strategies for both parties to promote safety programmes to students over the next two years.
