PETALING JAYA (Jan 27, 2014): Lawyer Lee Chin Cheh (pix) yesterday resigned as the state assemblyman for Kajang.
Lee, 43, said the decision was made based on common interests and to strengthen the Pakatan Rakyat’s ability to serve the people in Selangor.
Confirming Lee’s resignation, state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh said the Election Commission (EC) would be informed today that the seat has been vacated.
Selangor PKR chief Azmin Ali said in a statement late yesterday that it has yet to decide on the suitable candidate to replace Lee but pointed out that the candidate must be a true “son of Selangor”.
He appealed to PKR Youth, which has proposed that Pakatan Rakyat de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim be the candidate for the Kajang by-election, to not get involved in the affairs of Selangor PKR leadership council.
Speculation is rife that Lee vacated the seat for Anwar to contest and eventually replace Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor mentri besar.
Commenting on the speculation, Abdul Khalid said yesterday that he would resign his post if the leadership of the three coalition parties of the state government reached a consensus on this and obtained the approval of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafudin Idris Shah.
