KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 29, 2014): Investigation papers of a probe against former MIC treasurer-general Datuk R Ramanan in a cheating case was re-submitted by police to the Attorney-General's Chambers on Monday.
Federal commercial crimes investigations director Commissioner Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said today investigators will wait for a reply from the Chambers on the next course of action on Ramanan.
The probe was initiated in 2003 following a police report by prominent psychiatrist Tan Sri Dr M Mahadevan who alleged that Ramanan misled him into paying out RM5.5 million.
Mahadevan alleged that Ramanan had led him to believe he could recover RM26.5 million owed to the psychiatrist by the Defence Ministry in backdated rental fees for a plot of land it had utilised for decades.
Last Thursday, a civil court responding to a suit filed by Mahadevan in 2010, found that Ramanan had fraudulently misled the doctor into paying him and ordered for the sum to be returned to Mahadevan.
Syed Ismail said on Sunday that police had wrapped up their probe months after the report was lodged and submitted their report to the Chambers.
However, he said the decision to press criminal charges or otherwise was not instituted against Ramanan three years ago as the Chambers had told police to wait for the outcome of the civil suit filed by the complainant before contemplating such an action.
The re-submission of the police investigation papers were made on Monday following the decision by the civil court last week.
On the same day, Ramanan also relinquished his post as MIC treasurer-general.
