KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 30, 2014): Former MIC secretary-general Datuk S. Murugesan (pix) has been appointed the party’s new treasurer-general.
His appointment comes in the wake of Datuk R. Ramanan vacating the position on Jan 27 following a High Court decision in a civil suit where he was ordered to return RM5.5 million to psychiatrist Tan Sri Dr M. Mahadevan.
He was found to have fraudulently received the money from the defence ministry when “assisting” the psychiatrist recover payment four years ago.
Ramanan, who was the MIC strategic vice-chairman before taking up the post of treasurer-general, relinquished his position to clear his name by filing an appeal against the High Court decision.
The police, meanwhile, have submitted investigation papers on a probe against Ramanan to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel in a statement today said: “Murugesan has agreed to concentrate on his new position as the treasurer-general.”
A lawyer by profession, he has been tasked by Palanivel to bring all MIC property under one roof.
“With Murugesan’s legal background, he will be able to manage the party accounts, funds and properties in a proper manner,” he said.
Murugesan had informed him that he will be able to work on soliciting funds from the corporate sector for the party.
When contacted, Murugesan told theSun that he was pleasantly surprised by the appointment.
While thanking Palanivel for the trust and confidence in him, he said he will carry out the task entrusted to him besides working towards strengthening the finances of the party.
